Accutane Warnings For Men and Women
Accutane is a medication that is available by prescription only to
treat severe cases of acne. While it is extremely effective as an acne
treatment, it can result in adverse side effects. Because some of these
side effects can be extremely harmful, extreme caution is urged and
there is a program in place by the FDA to reduce the risk of certain
high risk side effects that can be life threatening or cause birth
defects in newborns.
While side effects vary for both men and women that take Accutane, in
most cases adverse side effects pertain to both men and women. However,
for specific side effects that can affect the fetus in pregnant
mothers, women must be educated and warned against specific issues
before, during and after Accutane treatment.
Side Effects for Men
Generally speaking, men
being treated by Accutane experience less serious risks, because they
can t become pregnant, however there are many adverse side effects that
are still prevalent. It should be noted that severe side effects can
always occur, for the most part, most individuals may experience only
minor or common side effects that are easily manageable. These side
effects can include acne flare ups, dry skin, some hair thinning, dry
eyes, fatigue and moodiness. Moderate side effects include
hypertension, moderate forms of the above side effects, as well as an
increase in glucose level. Severe side effects can include eye problems
such as poor night vision, cataracts and dry eyes, hypertension and
severe depression or mood changes.
Side Effects for Women
In additions to the
general warnings for men, women should not be pregnant before starting
treatment, during Accutane treatment or shortly after Accutane
treatment.
General Warning for Both Men and Women
Both men and women should avoid the following when being treated by Accutane:
1) Do not become pregnant or breastfeed (women only).
2) You should not give blood during your Accutane treatment and for at least one month afterwards.
3) You should consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other types of medications while on Accutane treatment. Certain drugs when taken together can have adverse side effects.
4) Since Accutane can cause vision problems, make sure you have no visual side effects before operating a motor vehicle or heavy machinery.
5) Protect your skin from exposure to sunlight. Many individuals being treated with Accutane can have sensitivity issues with their skin, sun burn can exacerbate these issues.
6) Refrain from cosmetic surgery while on Accutane.
7) Consult with your doctor or health care professional if you become severely depressed or if you notice mood changes.
8) Consult with your doctor or health care professional if you experience any mild, moderate or severe reaction that you think is caused by Accutane.
Accutane can be an effective way to treat severe forms of acne
and while there are risks of adverse side effects, most individuals
that are treated with Accutane do not experience moderate or severe
effects. As with all medical treatments, consult with your doctor to
see if Accutane is right for you.
